IoT, AI, Blockchain, 5G., etc. What does it all Mean?

It’s difficult to keep up with all of the developments in information technology over the past couple of years.  More and more acronyms and buzz words have popped up and it isn’t always clear what they mean. 

Here’s a quick cheat sheet for your reference:

 

  • IoT – Internet of Things
    • The internet of things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer data over a data network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.  Organizations in a variety of industries are using IoT to operate more efficiently, better understand customers to deliver enhanced customer service, improve decision-making and increase the value of the business.  For example, an IoT system that monitors pressure and flow of natural gas lines and transfers that data via a wireless network to a centralized database for analysis by the natural gas company to check for anomalies and issues. 
  • AI – Artificial Intelligence
    •  Artificial intelligence (AI), sometimes called machine intelligence, is ”intelligence” demonstrated by machines.  A true artificially-intelligent system is one that can learn on its own.  Artificial intelligence is a theory and development of computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligenceSpeech recognitiondecision-makingvisual perception, are features of human intelligence that artificial intelligence may possess. A good example of AI is voice-powered personal assistants like Siri and Alexa.  Another example is autonomously-powered self-driving vehicles boasting powerful predictive capabilities.
  •  Blockchain
    • A blockchain is a growing list of records called “blocks” that are linked using cryptography (secure communication) methods.  By design, a blockchain is resistant to modification of the data. It’s “an open, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way”.  Blockchain was invented in 2008 to serve as the public transaction ledge of cryptocurrency Bitcoin.  Blockchain is a distributed database existing on multiple computers at the same time. It is constantly growing as new sets of recordings, or ‘blocks’, are added to it. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to the previous block, so they actually form a chain.
  • Hyperconverged Data Center Infrastructure
    • Hyperconverged platforms include a hypervisor for virtualized computing, software-defined storage, and virtualized networking, and they typically run on standard, off-the-shelf servers. Multiple nodes can be clustered together to create pools of shared compute and storage resources, designed for convenient consumption.  The value of these platforms is that stand alone servers, storage arrays, networking and virtualization technologies are no longer necessary.  There is a single point of management and adding more capacity is typically far simpler than with traditional IT systems.  For IT leaders who are embarking on data center modernization projects, hyperconvergence can provide the agility of public cloud infrastructure without relinquishing control of hardware on their own premises.  There are several OEMs that manufacture hyperconverged platforms.
  • 5G Cellular – 5th Generation Cellular Network
    • Currently, our mobile phone network is in its fourth generation or 4G.  The fifth generation or 5G is up and coming and has been rolled out in some areas of the world including certain cities in the U.S.  5G will not only make our mobile devices better, smarter and faster, 5G will also affect many other kinds of devices, including industrial robots, security cameras, drones and cars that send traffic data to one another.  5G offers mobile internet speeds that will let people download entire movies within seconds and most likely bring big changes to video games, sports and shopping.  By 2024 there will be over 1.5 billion of us connected to 5G, according to Ericsson, a company that makes some of the infrastructure and systems that makes 5G possible.

Q1 2019 Market Share for Data Storage System OEMs.

According to IDC (International Data Corporation), the Q1 Data Storage Systems market share was as follows:

  • Dell Technologies including EMC was the largest supplier for the quarter, accounting for 22.2% of total worldwide enterprise storage systems revenue and declining 1.0% year over year.
  • HPE/New H3C Group was the second largest supplier with an 17.3% share of revenue on a year-to-year contraction of 1.6%.
  • NetApp generated a 6.7% share of total revenue, holding the number 3 position during the quarter.
  • Hitachi held the fourth position at 3.6% of the market
  • Lenovo, IBM, Pure Storage, Huawei, Fujitsu and Inspur all statistically tied for the number 5 position with shares of 2.5%, 2.5%, 2.2%, 2.1%,1.9%, and 1.9% respectively.

IT Acronyms! Are they driving you crazy? EOL and EOSL – what exactly do they mean?

When Dell EMC, NetApp, HPE, IBM, Cisco, Brocade, or other OEMs announce that a system will reach End of Life (EOL) or End of Service Life (EOSL), it can be difficult to understand what these terms mean for your data center infrastructure. Not only do you have to understand what each term means, but you also have to determine the next steps for your EOL hardware. What is the difference between End of Life and End of Service Life?

End of Life (EOL)

EOL means that the OEM has decided that a specific system has reached the end of its “useful lifespan”. This is when the OEM recommends doing a hardware refresh to the latest generation of their hardware. This is also when the OEM will no longer be selling the hardware in question. Most manufacturers discontinue the production of hardware as a way to create demand for their latest product offerings, not necessarily because the earlier generation is no longer useful. There are still extended OEM hardware maintenance options at this point in your equipment’s lifecycle, but this stage is a good time to evaluate your support needs.

End of Service Life (EOSL)

EOSL indicates that all support, including both primary and extended, will no longer be offered by the OEM. There are certain instances when you may still be able to obtain maintenance from them, but this will come at a premium cost. Now that your equipment is EOSL, if you want to keep the system you will need to consider a third party vendor for your maintenance needs.  Choosing a third-party provider for your maintenance services saves your business money and provides the same benefits like prompt support, expert advice, and the ability to extend the life of your IT systems.

Extend the Life of Your EOL and EOSL Hardware

End users have several options when it comes to extending the life of an EOL system. Just because the OEM still offers support doesn’t mean it’s right for your IT budget and environment.  Using Third Party Maintenance (TPM) may be more ideal. Two Problems: Latency and Bandwidth

To better understand the impact micro data centers are having on our world, it is helpful to consider two key problem areas associated with data transmission over an IT network.

The first is, LATENCY.

Think of it like this.

When you store digital data in the Cloud, in reality you’re storing it geographically apart from you. The digital files are stored off of your computer device in a 3rd-party data center many miles away from your physical location. The delay you experience when opening a file depends on the distance you are from this Cloud data storage. This delay is called, latency. And it can cause big problems if your need for the data is ‘mission critical’ (Ie. used for navigation,  medical care, banking or other immediate and pressing circumstances).

Now let’s think about bandwidth.

Again, according to WhatIs.TechTarget.Com, “Bandwidth is the capacity of a wired or wireless network communications link to transmit the maximum amount of data from one point to another over [X][2]” (X representing the medium used for transmission).

If you are experiencing latency in your responsiveness to the Cloud, one way to offset this is to increase the bandwidth of your Internet connection. But as you might imagine, this costs money. And depending on the amount of bandwidth you request — lots of it.

Edge Computing and Micro Data Centers

According to Hewlett Packard Enterprise, “Edge computing is the practice of processing data near the edge of your network, where the data is being generated, instead of in a centralized data-processing warehouse.[3]

Edge computing provides a boost in processing power and reduction in latency close to the physical world where the tech is being used.

Micro data centers are just as their name implies. Small, fully contained, digital data storage units which can be stored in a closet, under a desk, or even camouflaged as furniture. Their primary role is to house data on the network’s edge…so it doesn’t need to take the time of traveling to the Cloud’s core.

Is Nimble Storage Support A Thing Of The Past: Buyout Promises vs. Buyout Reality?

On April 17, 2017, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced their acquisition of Nimble Storage, Inc.1 Many questioned what would happen to Nimble’s signature support and their InfoSight predictive analytics tool.

Emotions ran high as IT professionals conversed about the subject on forums such as the “Sysadmin” thread on Reddit. Excerpts below2

Concerns About Nimble

Username “HeadacheCentral” stated, 

“Nimble's biggest selling point for me was the support - call them once, and you're onto the guy who can help you fix it.

HPE's ‘support’ is a joke - crappy VoIP lines to some [bleep] cube farm ‘call logging center’ in Singapore or India or Malaysia staffed by people who I frequently can't understand because of their accents. And then the immediate response of ‘Oh, your firmware is out of date, please upgrade it before we will replace the failed hard drive’ and the 4 or 5 calls before you actually get something done.”

Username “TechnocratByNight” shared, 

“We've just bought our second unit and have no concerns. The arrays are phenomenal and the level of support that Nimble provide was one of the reasons HPE bought them.”

Username “Miserygut” chimed in, 

“Infosight support is mostly automated. If HPE have any sense (I'm being extremely generous) they'll keep the Nimble model and use Infosight across the rest of their products to run lean/good quality support. Then again this is HPE we're talking about.’

Contributors to the thread conveyed their opinions both pro and con about Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s acquisition of Nimble Storage, Inc.

But it wasn’t until username “HPEStorageGuy” spoke up that you learned how HPE intended to use Nimble within their IT ecosystem.

Buyout Promises

“HPEStorageGuy” explained,

“HPE plans to integrate Nimble in a way that will retain the unique Nimble customer experience.” He wrote, there “are three aspects to maintaining and improving the customer experience over time:

1. The plan is to integrate the existing Nimble support and management team into the HPE organization. They will continue to be dedicated to supporting the Nimble Storage product line.

2. Beyond the support experience, Nimble customers frequently reference that they love Nimble because it ‘just works.’ HPE is planning to integrate Nimble engineers and management into HPE and maintain them as a product group. Design for simplicity, quality and resiliency will continue to be guiding principles for the development and QA teams.

3. The predictive analytics and machine learning capabilities of InfoSight are strengthened as the volume of data points available for analysis grows. By integrating information across the HPE server, 3PAR and Simplivity installed base, InfoSight will become more powerful and be able to predict and prevent more issues.”
