Building a Co-Location Disaster Recovery Capability
A Global Leader in the manufacturing of wheelchairs, bariatric equipment, disability scooters, respiratory products and other health related home-care products had a requirement to ensure their mission critical production environment was recoverable in the event of a site disaster. The goal was to protect this system by creating a duplicate environment and placing it in a co-location disaster recovery facility. The Client partnered with Sherlock Services to provide a recommendation which met a service level objective of recovering within 24 hours and losing no more than 4 hours of information. In disaster recovery terms, an RTO (Recovery Time Objective) of 24 hours or less and an RPO (Recovery Point Objective) of information in 4 hours or less. The Sherlock Services recommended solution exceeded the RTO and provided a recovery time in less than 1 hour, and exceeded the RPO with less than an hour of data loss.
Sherlock Services, as part of this project, provided a Project Manager who coordinated all activities, System Engineers for rack and stack of equipment, and a Level 3 Engineer for migration and testing.
In the architecture and design phase of the project, Sherlock Services built the environment per the required specifications of the Client at the Sherlock Services facility, and ensured that all configurations were accurate. Tasks included:
- Built and Configured all Systems
- Migrated Data from the Production System
- Simulated Backup Devices for Trial Test
In the system configuration phase of the project, Sherlock Services prepared the new test server for migration of the existing test environment over to it. All software was available for the Client’s staff to test and validate. A clone of the environment was taken after hours and the bulk of the preparation and testing was done during normal business hours. Tasks included:
- Created Clone of Test Environment
- Installed Additional Systems
- Tuned System Parameters
- Zone Switch for Proper Connectivity
- Carved Up Storage LUNs
- Tested and Validated 3rd Party Applications
Post installation, Sherlock Services provided 24 x 7 x 365 support. Services included monitoring, on-site spare parts, and Level 3 engineering support.
